Research background

My research focuses on technology adoption in construction organizations and project settings. For my PhD at the University of Hong Kong, I examined the sociotechnical interactions in a project-based ‘technology transfer’ attempt. Post-PhD, I investigated how SME contractors were responding to the Hong Kong government’s BIM mandate for public projects.

Integrated Management of Margins through Evaluation, Design, Analysis, Tracking and Negotiation

Over-engineering of systems is an often-hidden source of inefficiency in systems, which can add significantly to their building and running costs, and reduce the sustainability of systems. One cause of over-engineering is a cumulative effect of different stakeholders adding margins to the...

Future Cities in the making – overcoming barriers to information modelling in socially responsible cities

What questions are City Information Modelling (CIM) and Building Information Modelling (BIM) best suited to answer? This project examines what digital information is commonly available in UK cities and what new information can be retrieved from the built environment through BIM to aid planning. It...

Case Study: Platform approach to design for manufacture and assembly

This project set out to show the benefits of a manufacture-led approach to construction, showing how it would support the commitments made by the UK government to improving the construction sector. In particular, it looked at ways in which the construction sector could learn lessons from the...

The Edge: a case study and template for BIM

This project developed a case study of The Edge in Amsterdam, billed as the world’s smartest building, for CDBB. This was not only for the sake of sharing this specific case, but also to use it as a template to build the “standard case study template.” When we consider other buildings, we can...

Staffordshire Bridges - Long Term Performance Monitoring using Fibre-Optic Sensors

The Stafford Area Improvement Programme was a joint venture by Atkins, Laing O’Rourke, Volker Rail and Network Rail to remove a bottleneck in the West Coast Main Line that resulted in high-speed trains being impeded by slower local passenger services or by goods trains. To alleviate this bottleneck...

The local governance of digital technology – implications for the cityscale digital twin

What part does city and regional governance play in how a city-level digital twin develops? It is necessary to understand the ways in which governance for digital twins is bound by context and the ways in which it is generalisable in order to successfully transfer knowledge and best practices among...

Co-Creating a City-Scale Digital Strategy and Framework: A Systems and Co-production Approach

Digital technologies have the potential to unlock major social and economic change for the World’s rapidly growing urban populations, creating value through more liveable, healthy and environmentally sustainable cities. However, this can only happen if city leaders are empowered to make intelligent...
