Today, 2 December 2021, marks the launch of the Global BIM Network’s (the Network’s) strategic Roadmap outlining a vision and collaborative pathway for public sector leadership across the globe.
The Global BIM Network Roadmap 2021-2025: Advancing the Digitalization of the Built Environment will promote public sector leadership efforts to collaborate with industry on the critical opportunity of digitalisation in response to the pandemic, climate change, and to drive inclusive growth through capacity building and knowledge transfer.
The Roadmap has been co-created by representatives from international public sector and multi-lateral organisations and public infrastructure funders connected and collaborating through the Network. It aims to advance the digital transformation of the global built environment for the public good and is being launched at the inaugural General Assembly. This is the first time the Network has officially convened, and the event includes a number of panel sessions bringing together policy makers, public procurers, infrastructure investors and industry leadership from across the world to share their in-country digitalisation strategies, best practice, knowledge and experience.
Adam Matthews, Chair of the Global BIM Network Steering Committee and Head of International at the Centre for Digital Built Britain, which is convening the General Assembly, said: “The Roadmap sets the framework for a global collaboration across all regions to advance the public sector's ability to support the sector's digitalisation - at scale. Accelerating the digitalisation of the built environment through the use of BIM across the construction and infrastructure sector globally enables us to deliver more sustainable, efficient and cost-effective infrastructure to communities around the world. The Roadmap marks the next step of the growing Network’s journey as more countries and regions recognise the benefits of working together to progress their digitalisation and built environment information management strategies – and share the benefits.”
Valentina Sarmiento, President of the BIM Network of Latin American Governments, who took part in the General Assembly, said: “As a regional network, we have direct experience of the benefits of sharing experiences and globalizing our knowledge. Being part of the Global BIM Network is essential for us because it opens the road to facilitate further international cooperation. We hope that the establishment of this global collaboration helps all the countries to accelerate their own programmes by creating an international hub where we can learn from each other’s experience. I would encourage other countries looking to increase the productivity of their construction industry through digital transformation to join the Global BIM Network.”
The Network was launched in March 2021 to connect the public sector, infrastructure investors and industry to increase learning and accelerate digital change across the global construction sector. This international congress of public sector representatives includes government policy makers, infrastructure ministries, public procurers and multi-lateral organizations, including the Inter-American Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, and the United Nations OPS.
The Network is supported and co-funded by HM Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Department for International Trade (DIT), Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the Construction Innovation Hub (CIH) and delivered by the Centre for Digital Built Britain (CDBB).

Definitions
BIM – Building Information Modelling (BIM) is the “use of a shared digital representation of a built asset to facilitate design, construction and operation processes to form a reliable basis for decisions” (BS EN ISO 19650-1:2018).
BIM facilitates early supply chain and operational team involvement. Furthermore, it unlocks more efficient and transparent ways of planning, designing, creating and maintaining built assets, whether buildings or infrastructure, over their whole lifecycle.

CDBB (Centre for Digital Built Britain) is a partnership between the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy and the University of Cambridge.
